Retinopathy Of Prematurity (ROP)

This is a condition where premature infants are born with normal vision or partial vision and becomes blind if the disease is not detected and treated in a short span of time. Viewing / recoding the image of the retina (inner layer of the eye ball) and looking for symptoms is the method of diagnosis. This can be treated using laser or cryotherapy (freezing method).

The existing methods of diagnosing the disease are either inadequate and requires high level of skill or involves very high investment in the equipment. This team is working towards finding a cost effective solution which does not require highly skilled or trained manpower to use the system.

We have done extensive study on the present ways of scanning and came up with a design concept. A proof of concept was done and this was tested on adults to get the image of the retina.

The next step would be design a custom optics and make the device more compact. We require external funding for this and are in the process of taking this forward
