We have an ancient culture rich with many beautiful forms of art. The concept of beauty (visual) has been prominent in all these forms. The colors, the texture of different materials, and the compositions are a treat to our eyes. But somewhere in our psyche we have this notion of anti beauty embedded.
Mareecha the demon disguised as a beautiful deer with a golden skin is the true turning point in our epic Ramayana. Sita attracted by the beauty of the deer falls into a trap. Truly depicts the concept of “beauty is skin deep”.
Every little kid cute looking gets an asymmetric black spot on the cheek to keep away the evil eye. Beauty always evokes a set of emotions which are not considered good or rather treated as an evil thought which need to be normalized by adding bit of visual aberrations.
The beautiful deity sculpture inside the temple comes with a demon face right on top as to balance out the looks.
All the oriental cultures have this concept of dualism. A way to balance out the positives and the negatives. May be the concept of beauty and the guilt also fall into the same theme.
